Located in south central Washington, Klickitat County, (pop. 22,000), lies at the junction where the Columbia River Gorge cuts through the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains, with expansive farms and wheat fields, vineyards, timberland, and magnificent Mt. Adams as a backdrop. The county seat and the county's largest city is Goldendale. With a mild year-round climate, the area is the perfect place to take advantage of an abundance of outdoor recreational activities, from fishing and hunting, to whitewater rafting, windsurfing, hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross country skiing, and snowmobiling. The Klickitat County Health Department began operation on January 1, 1998, after becoming independent from Southwest Washington Health District. Currently, the Klickitat County Board of Health consists of the County Board of Commissioners plus two citizen representatives. Policy development for health department programs is guided by the Board of Health. The Board of Health sets policies for environmental health and personal health services. The Public Health Department has 20 staff members and its 2019 budget was $1,361,037.

Under the general direction of the Board of County Commissioners and the Health Officer, the Public Health Director supervises all aspects of the Klickitat County Health Department, working according to State and Federal regulations, and County policies and procedures.

A Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing, Environmental Health, Health Education, or related field, plus 3-5 years of experience in Public Health and Education, including management/supervision experience, is required. Knowledge of the Revised Code of Washington and Washington Administrative Codes pertaining to Public Health Administration in Washington State is highly preferred. A master's degree in Public Health, Public Administration, or related field is preferred.
