Description

Job Summary
The Development Services Department has an opening for one Building Plans Examiner or Structural Engineer. The position a candidate is placed into will depend upon the candidate's qualifications. The Building Plans Examiner reviews and evaluates residential and commercial building plans and specifications to ensure the proposed construction complies with local, state and national building, fire, mechanical, plumbing, accessibility, flood hazard, energy and related codes. Duties may include project management of commercial and multi-family projects. In addition to these responsibilities, the Structural Engineer takes an active leadership role in the structural review of more complex commercial and multi-family projects.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review residential and commercial plans.
  • Occasionally inspect buildings and structures for compliance with construction codes, including structural as well as fire and life safety provisions.
  • Work collaboratively with staff from other departments.
  • Develop good working relationships with the general public and make difficult and sometimes unpopular decisions.
  • Maintain an awareness and application of safe working procedures.

 

**In addition to the above responsibilities, the Structural Plans Examiner will also:

  • Review plans and design calculations for complex structural systems used in a broad range of buildings.


Qualifications
Education and Experience Requirements

Building Plans Examiner:

  • Graduation from an accredited two-year college or university.
  • Three or more year of professional related experience in the construction industry or related areas.
  • Or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.


Structural Engineer:

  • Bachelor's degree from an ABET accredited college or university
  • Six or more years of experience in the field of structural engineering
  • OR any combination of education, experience, and training that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities to the two items noted above
  • Washington State Structural Engineering license

Both positions require the following minimum qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the International Building Code (IBC) and other regulations pertaining to construction and development.
  • Knowledge of design, engineering, materials and methods related to residential and commercial construction.
  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and interpret codes and evaluate project proposals and projects under construction to verify conformance with code requirements.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.
  • Ability to make appropriate, sometimes unpopular decisions.
  • Ability to communicate technical information in a non-technical manner.
  • Ability to respond diplomatically to angry citizens or clients.
  • Ability to coordinate activities with other departments.
  • Knowledge of computer software applications.
  • ICC Building Plans Examiner certification preferred.

 

Additional Requirements

Building Plans Examiner:

  • ICC Plans Examiner certification or the ability to obtain the certification within one year of hire.


Structural Plans Examiner:

  • ICC Plans Examiner certification or the ability to obtain the certification within one year of hire

Building Plans Examiner Monthly Pay Range; $8,249.93 - $9,107.24

Structural Engineer Monthly Pay Range; $9,804.53 - $10,825.23
