ABOUT THE POSITION: Spokane Valley is seeking a highly qualified and enthusiastic employee to serve our City as a full-time Assistant Engineer in our Development Engineering Group. The ideal candidate will support the City by assisting in the review and inspection of private project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards. The ideal candidate will have exceptional technical skills, along with a strong desire to provide superior service to both internal and external customers. SELECTED EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: The primary duties for this position are the coordination and assistance in the review and inspection of private project development for compliance with standards, codes, and regulations. Under the direction of a Senior Engineer, oversees assigned projects to ensure consultant/contractor/developer compliance. Performs inspections and/or coordinates with field inspectors and consultants to ensure construction activities conform to design documents, standards, codes, and regulations. Responds to public or other inquiries relative to engineering procedures on specific projects. Maintains regular contact with consulting engineers, City, County, State, and Federal agencies, and professional and technical groups regarding division activities and services. DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience: Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering or a closely related field and minimum of one (1) year previous related experience. Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and methods as applicable to a municipal setting. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with employees, consultants, other governmental agency representatives, City officials, and the general public. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Must possess a valid State driver's license or have the ability to obtain one prior to employment; must be physically capable of moving about construction work sites and lift up to 25 lbs. Registration as an Engineer In Training (EIT) is required; registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) is desirable. Successful completion of a background check, including a criminal check, is a requirement of employment at Spokane Valley. SALARY: Anticipated hiring range is in Grade 15 and is $5,541 - $7,827 per month with the hiring salary depending on qualifications. This is a FLSA-exempt, represented position in the Engineering Division. BENEFITS: Health benefits are provided through the Association of Washington Cities Employee Benefit Trust. The City currently provides excellent medical, dental, life, long term disability, vision, and Employee Assistance benefits. Ten paid holidays, vacation, sick leave and five days of paid administration leave per year (prorated depending on hire date). The required retirement system of the City is Washington Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS) which requires an employee contribution. In addition, employees have the option of signing up for a 457 deferred compensation plan. The City does not participate in Social Security. However, the City has adopted a 401(A) Social Security substitute plan with the same contribution rates as FICA. All positions are considered at-will.
