Tax & Licensing Auditor job in Auburn

This position performs professional work in support of the Finance Department and will be supervised by the Accounting and Financial Reporting Manager II. The duties include a variety of technical, financial, and analytical duties associated with the administration of the City of Auburn’s Business and Occupation (B&O) tax program. Work is characterized by a substantial volume of independent and professional work with limited supervision. The position performs complex, large projects and audits including exercising good work habits, knowledge, independence, and keeping the supervisor apprised of project and workload status.

The City of Auburn adopted its first Business and Occupation Tax Code on May 5, 2021 to help balance the mix and diversity of its General Fund revenue sources and ensure long term fiscal sustainability. This new tax takes effect January 1, 2022 and the City of Auburn is looking for an experienced tax professional who is a strong project leader, understands complex tax laws, and works closely with staff and the business community helping them navigate the City of Auburn’s Business and Occupation Tax Code.

• Plan, develop and provide B&O tax training workshops for taxpayers and other stakeholders.
• Assist in the development and maintenance of city B&O tax and licensing ordinances, tax guides, procedures, and other documents governing the city’s B&O tax.
• Respond to questions and inquiries from city staff and management and taxpayers concerning the city’s B&O tax, and provide other guidance as appropriate.
• Provide appropriate notifications and other correspondence to taxpayers and other stakeholders.
• Coordinate with the City’s business licensing division to promote compliance with unregistered businesses; maintaining accurate/updated business information; account closure requests; and follow up with delinquent tax payers.
• Maintain current knowledge in the field by reviewing court cases and new statutes; assist the City Attorney’s Office in preparing legal briefs and court arguments; attend judicial hearings and provide direct testimony before a hearings examiner, or in court, as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with: 

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or closely related field. 
• Three (3) years of revenue auditing experience or two (2) years of Washington Municipal B&O Tax experience.
• A combination of education and experience which would provide the applicant with desired knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job.
