Description

Community Planning and Economic Development is a fast-paced work environment dedicated to accountability, consistency, and transparency.

The Community Planning and Economic Development (CPED) department is seeking a highly motivated Plans Examiner to join our Development Services Division in the Building Services unit. Under the Development Services Planning Manager or an assigned Building Services Supervisor, the Plans Examiner is responsible for reviewing drawings for the construction of residential, multifamily, light commercial and other buildings in Thurston County for compliance with the state building codes.

The Development Services Division has a significant role in supporting Thurston County's strategic initiative to balance development with preservation of the County's rural character, natural areas, and open spaces. As a Plans Examiner for the Development Services Division you will work closely with CPED team members in permitting and will provide journey level professional expertise. You may also perform building inspections and other associated duties on an as needed basis.

The Development Services team is responsible for the County's permitting needs in several areas including:

Planning:

  • Land use regulation implementation
  • Review of land use proposals
  • Review of Environmental permit applications
  • Public Hearings

Building:

  • Compliance and building inspections
  • Review of building permit applications

Code Compliance:

  • Identifying violations
  • Building Development Center:
  • Providing customer service
  • Application intake

Plans Examiner essential functions include but are not limited to:

  • Reviews permits for compliance with International Building, Mechanical, and Fire Codes, Uniform Plumbing Codes, Washington State Energy Codes, Accessibility Codes, Regulations, and the National Flood Insurance Program.
  • Provides technical consultation, code interpretations, and communicates code requirements to other team members, the public, and design professionals.
  • Communicates both verbally and in writing in an impartial manner while maintaining respectful working relationships with other team members, departments, contractors, and the public.
  • Reviews new and alternative construction techniques for compliance with alternate methods allowed under the code.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Construction Management, or related field
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Plans Examiner, Building or Combination Inspector and three (3) years of experience in construction or related experience. Additional years of experience may substitute for education on a year for year basis.
  • Must be certified by the International Codes Council (ICC) as a Commercial, Residential, or Combination Plans Examiner and Commercial, Residential, or Combination Building Inspector.
  • Valid Washington State Driver's License or have an appropriate accommodation.
