Description

Environmental Services Division of Public Works, Water Resources is looking for a qualified and motivated environmental professional to assist with the implementation of the Storm and Surface Water Utility's aquatic habitat stewardship mission.

This position provides field data collection, data analysis, and implementation oversight supporting habitat assessment, restoration planning and restoration. The successful candidate will gain a greater understanding of Olympia's natural resources while working with internal and external partners to protect and enhance our community's unique habitats.

Ideal Candidate Profile
• A thorough understanding of forest and aquatic habitat sampling techniques, including variable and fixed radius plot sampling, regeneration sampling, noxious/invasive species sampling, snag and coarse woody debris sampling, wetland delineation, stream sampling and riparian condition assessment.
• Ability to develop and collect data that is statistically accurate.
• Ability to collect and analyze both field and remote sensing data.
• Technical competency with using computer databases.
• Managing, collecting, and analyzing spatial habitat data using ArcGIS.
• A thorough understanding of forest habitat, stream and wetland ecology and classification methodologies.
• Ability to develop stewardship and habitat enhancement plans for aquatic habitats, adjacent buffers, and other urban natural areas.
• An understanding of forest stand dynamics including the relationships between forest structure, stand density and habitat potential of a site.
• Experience in native plant identification and knowledge of Western Washington natural history and ecology.
• Experience in invasive species and noxious weed identification and control techniques.
• A thorough understanding of how snag and course woody debris can be measured and evaluated.
• A strong interest in and knowledge of urban habitat restoration techniques.

Experience/Education
• Four year degree in Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science, Environmental Science and/or a closely related field is preferred.
• A two year degree in Forestry, Wildlife Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Science, Environmental Science and/or a closely related field with specific applicable work experience may substitute for the four year degree on a year for year basis.
• Two years specifically related experience in ecological/habitat data collection and analysis is required. (applicable graduate school work / advanced degrees, may qualify as a substitute for all or a portion of the required two years experience)
• Specialized certifications (certified forester, certified wildlife biologist, certified wetland scientists, certified arborist, etc.) are a plus.
• Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License (Public, ROW and Aquatic) is a plus.
• Additional education and/or experience in habitat planning and/or restoration is desired.

Special Requirements
Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License at the time of appointment.
