In addition to the salary posted, the City contributes 4% of the salary to a deferred compensation retirement savings plan.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Parks Maintenance Worker I incumbents perform basic tree, grounds, and natural resource area maintenance duties not requiring previous experience in grounds or natural resources maintenance.

Parks Maintenance Worker II incumbents perform intermediate tree, grounds, and natural resource area maintenance duties and maintain tools and equipment.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions - The following duties are associated with the Parks Maintenance Worker I level:

  • Prepare and maintain ball fields, athletic fields and surrounding landscape areas.
  • Mow and edge turf; trim, weed and prune landscaped areas; prepare and fertilize soil; plant lawns, trees, shrubs, hedges and flowers.
  • Assist with planting, applying chemicals per industry standards, maintaining, pruning, and removing trees, vegetation, landscaping and turf growing on City streets, parks, and in natural areas.
  • Assist in providing traffic control during maintenance procedures.
  • Hoe weeds, mow and maintain turf, assist with pruning shrubs and trees, and trim landscaped areas; prepare and fertilize soils; water various grounds areas by hand and operate irrigation systems as assigned.
  • Collect trash and perform general grounds maintenance.
  • Navigate on foot through natural areas and forested settings on uneven terrain during poor weather conditions.
  • Operate tools and equipment such as riding and push mowers, edgers, weed eaters, pick-up truck, power sweeper, blower, rakes, brooms, shovels, hose, chain saws, loppers, pole saws, hand pruners, wood chippers, trencher, jack hammer and other park and trail, grounds, and natural resources maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Clean and perform routine maintenance on parks and trails, grounds, or natural resources maintenance equipment and tools.
  • Assist in performing traffic control and flagging duties as assigned and work safely under heavy traffic conditions.
  • Assist with fence, asphalt, and concrete repairs.
  • Assist in operations, maintenance, and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Remain current with required risk management training.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance, work evening and/or weekend hours as assigned (overtime eligibility pursuant to collective bargaining agreement), and travel as required.
  • Standard Functions:
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be assigned to support critical city priorities during disasters or other emergencies.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:

Parks Maintenance Worker I requirements:

  • Sufficient training and/or experience to demonstrate the incumbent has the knowledge and/or abilities to perform the job duties listed above.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Successful passing of a required background check.
  • The following certificates are required within 1 year of employment:
  • Valid Forklift certificate
  • Flagging and Traffic Control certificate
  • First Aid/CPR/AED certificate
  • Parks Maintenance Worker II requirements:

In addition to the requirements above, an applicant at the Parks Maintenance Worker II position must also possess a minimum of 1 year of experience maintaining grass, trees, shrubs, natural resources areas, and related equipment.

  • The following certificates are required within 1 year of employment:
  • Washington State Pesticide Applicator's License
