Description

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Under the direction of the Mechanic Supervisor or Remote Site Supervisor perform specialized and skilled work involving the repair and maintenance of a variety of fire apparatus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Repair, overhaul and maintain a variety of fire department equipment and vehicles.
• Inspect assigned equipment; diagnose noise, electrical and mechanical problems and determine the extent of repairs.
• Perform preventative maintenance duties as needed; maintain work area for cleanliness and safety.
• Maintain, troubleshoot and repair air, brake, electrical and hydraulic systems; maintain and repair components in fire pump system.
• Repair, overhaul, tune and adjust a variety of diesel and gas engines, transmissions, pumps and valves of assigned equipment.
• Design and fabricate specialized equipment; perform welding, replace or rebuild needed parts and equipment; weld and fabricate parts, as necessary.
• Respond to emergency calls for assistance; travel to sites as necessary, to assist others or transport vehicles and equipment; drive and operate equipment at emergencies.
• Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment.
• Maintain records of maintenance, test and work performed on a computer-based system.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge Of:
• Methods, tools, equipment and materials used in the overhaul, repair and maintenance of fire department equipment and vehicles
• Air, brake, electrical, hydraulic systems, and air conditioning systems
• Equipment modification and rebuild techniques
• Metal fabrication and welding
• Safety requirements of various types of vehicles and equipment
• Basic record keeping techniques on a computer-based system
• Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy
• Correct usage of English grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary
• Personal computers and its basic use
• Air conditioning systems
• NFPA and DOT standards as they pertain to vehicle maintenance

Skilled In:
• Using hand and machine tools, including but not limited to electronic testing equipment
• Analyzing, diagnosing, and repairing mechanical and electrical problems
• Interpersonal communication and relations using tact, patience and courtesy
• Gaining sensitive information about accidents/damage without alienating the driver/operator

Ability To:
• Repair, overhaul, maintain and operate a variety of emergency response equipment and vehicles
• Use shop tools and testing equipment safely and efficiently
• Perform metal fabrication and welding
• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Maintain accurate records
• Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action
• Perform heavy manual labor with a positive attitude
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others
• Maintain organized and clean work area
• Operate overhead cranes, hydraulic lifts, hoists, jacks, drill presses, brakes, and lathes and other regular shop tools
• Obtain certification as a forklift operator

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Education:
Graduation from high school; and a two-year degree from a technical college in a related field; and

Experience:
Four (4) years journey-level experience in the repair, overhaul and maintenance of a variety of vehicles and heavy power-driven equipment, including two (2) years’ experience working in a fleet environment. Certified in the following:
• Automotive Service Excellence
• Master Diesel Technician and Emergency Vehicle Technician
• Master Fire Apparatus Technician.

Or:
In place of the above requirements, the incumbent may possess any combination of relevant education and experience which would demonstrate the individual’s knowledge, skill and ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities listed above regardless of the years of experience.

LICENSES AND SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Valid Washington State Driver’s License
• Must successfully pass the pre-employment driver's records check; successfully complete the department’s Emergency Vehicle Incident Prevention Course and maintain an excellent driving record
• Master mechanic tool set

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Shop environment; subject to driving from site to site, noise and may be subject to adverse weather conditions; employees in this position may be exposed to fumes and potentially hazardous materials and equipment.
