The Opportunity: Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager

The Alderwood Water & Wastewater District (AWWD) is seeking an approachable, ethical, and results-driven Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager in the Maintenance and Operations (M&O) Department. Located in the fast-growing Puget Sound region, AWWD is focused on the expansion, maintenance, and replacement of its critical infrastructure. AWWD currently employs 147 employees and the Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager will lead a team that is responsible for maintenance and operation of a membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment facility.

The position reports to the Maintenance & Operation Director. The successful candidate for this position will supervise the Lead WWTF Operator, Sr. WWTF Operators, WWTF Operators, WWTF Operator/Mechanic, Lab Technician, temporary staff, and any other position performing duties in the assigned area.

Under the direction of the Maintenance and Operations Director, the Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager will plan, direct, evaluate, oversee, organize, manage, supervise and coordinate activities in the membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant and is responsible for ensuring compliance with regulations and requirements of regulatory authorities having jurisdiction.

This position is charged with coordinating activities with other divisions, outside agencies, contractors, and the public. The Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager will work cooperatively with other managers and District staff to manage all projects related to assigned work areas. This position is subject to 24-hour call out.

The ideal Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager is a problem solver with the capability to look at how things operate and identify changes that can increase the efficiency and the effectiveness of the work group. The successful candidate will be an excellent communicator who can build trust with the work group, customers and the public and is willing to listen to new ideas. Candidates should have a supportive and participatory leadership style but be capable of adapting depending on the situation or individual employee they are working with.

The candidate should have a strong sense of current and future trends that impact the wastewater industry including a strong pulse on current effluent limits and ability to plan for statutory changes from the regulatory agencies including Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Ecology that will impact the future of the Treatment Facility.

The successful candidate will have the functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint. They may possess any equivalent combination of education, experience and Washington State certifications that provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the job.

A candidate that possesses an Associate’s degree would be required to have at minimum 4 years of operating experience in a Class II Treatment Plant, including three years in a supervisory capacity. A degree in engineering, chemistry, biology, microbiology is preferred but not required.
A candidate that possesses a Bachelor’s degree would be required to have at minimum 2 years of operating experience in a Class II Treatment Plant, including three years in a supervisory capacity. A degree in engineering, chemistry, biology, microbiology is preferred but not required.
The Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager must possess a Washington State Class I Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators license certification at the time of hire. The Wastewater Treatment Facility Manager must possess and maintain a Valid Washington State Driver’s License, Industrial First Aid Card.

The preferred Candidate will currently possess a Washington State Class III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operators license certification and the selected candidate will be required to obtain this certification within two years of appointment. In the supplemental questionnaire, candidates will be required to state how they will be able to meet the requirements to obtain the Class III certification within two years of appointment.

The pay range for this position is $98,030 - $131,394 annually, with a starting pay range of $98,030 - $113,506 dependent upon experience and qualifications.
