CITY OF OLYMPIA invites applications for the position of:  Equity and Inclusion Coordinator

$92,955.20 - $113,027.20 Annually

DESCRIPTION:
Under the direction of the Human Resources Director, this position will help design and implement diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) training, organizational development, and leadership training opportunities to City employees. Leads as a subject matter expert in areas of technical expertise on diversity equity and inclusion, organizational effectiveness, and leadership development programs. Provides guidance to retain, promote, and develop diverse talent for the organization.

This role will create, develop, implement, and conduct training and development programs for employees; and provide strategic guidance and implement policies to increase the diversity, equity and inclusion of the City’s workforce. They will be expected to continuously research the most current DEI best practices and policies to provide ongoing guidance to internal staff.
Responsibilities include: prioritizing short, mid, and long-terms goals within the City; developing evaluation plans and metrics of success; working with all entities in the City to ensure that the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion are woven into the fabric of the organization.

Ideal candidate
The ideal candidate will have a passion for developing environments that celebrate diversity, equity and inclusion. Has the skill set and courage to walk effectively with colleagues down the long road of organizational culture change supporting diversity, equity & inclusion. Has experience researching and integrating best practices of other organizations leading in DEI implementation. They will have strong leadership skills, and experience in dealing with highly sensitive, complex and political situations to advance racial justice and equity with tact and diplomacy. In addition, the candidate will demonstrate they are results-oriented, skilled in managing multiple competing timelines in a fast-paced changing environment, and highly competent in communicating complex concepts to diverse audiences.

  • A fundamental understanding of current issues and challenges facing individuals from underserved communities including sensitivity to racial equity/diversity.
  • Working closely with leadership teams to create, design & implement organizational development philosophy, initiatives, programs, tactics and processes that impact leadership development, employee engagement, customer experience, career tracks and related areas.
  • Theories, principles and practices of effective management and strategic planning process and techniques.
  • Social, political and environmental issues influencing equity program development and implementation.
  • Effective institutional change management principles and practices.
  • Effective interpersonal and group communication techniques.
  • Has experience bringing together diverse opinions around collaborative values.
  • Commitment to improving City effectiveness to deliver meaningful, real-world results.
  • Ability to serve as a change agent and experience in change management.
  • Ability to influence areas without direct reporting relationships.
  • Ability to communicate City vision and strategic direction, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to facilitate and mediate to achieve outcomes.

Education/Experience:

  1. 5 years of progressive experience with an emphasis in diversity, equity and inclusion; civil rights laws such as EEO, ADA and Title VI policies, and DEI work which includes at least 2 years of leading and implementing diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in complex organizations and in community outreach.
  2. Experience in the public sector preferred.
  3. Experience in working with midsize organizations in organizational development.
  4. Creating and implementing large scale training programs.

Supervision:

  1. Supervise staff as assigned.

Accountability:

  1. An Equity and Inclusion Coordinator is accountable to the Human Resources Director for the successful completion of all self-initiated or assigned projects, duties, and responsibilities.
  2. Strict adherence to confidentiality is required.

Working Conditions:

  1. Work is performed in an office; however, this position will be working from home for the foreseeable future due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. This position requires periods of intense concentration over extended periods of time and is subject to frequent interruption for questions and advice.
  2. Stress associated with competing demands for services and meeting timelines is always present.
  3. Positions in this class are distinguished by greater ambiguity in assignments, increased decision-making and greater responsibility for implementation of their recommendations following communication with and approval by highest level of management.
  4. Incumbent is expected to exercise independent judgment and discretion in the choice of work methods, personal deadlines and the nature of recommendations made.
  5. Incumbent works with detailed, complex, and sensitive materials and exercise considerable communications, supervision and human relations skills as a routine part of the job.
  6. Incumbent typically handles numerous projects or programs simultaneously.
