The Opportunity: Safety Coordinator

The Alderwood Water & Wastewater District (AWWD) is seeking a full-time Safety Coordinator for District. Located in the fast-growing Puget Sound region, AWWD is focused on the expansion, maintenance and replacement of its critical infrastructure. AWWD currently employs 148 employees and the Safety Coordinator responsible for coordinating and administering all aspects of occupational health and safety for the District. Essential duties include the implementation and maintenance of District-wide safety policies and practices; assisting departments in developing and implementing department-specific safety programs; performing safety training; managing the District Commercial Driver’s License compliance with all regulations related to a Department of Transportation (DOT) “Safety Sensitive” position; managing the District Worker’s Compensation program and maintaining all records for occupational health and safety programs.

  • The successful candidate will be responsible for Develops, coordinates, and advises management regarding the implementation of all policies, procedures, guidelines, rules, and other federal and state safety regulations related the District’s safety programs and Accident Prevention Plan (APP) including components such as Hazard Communication Plan and Worker Right to Know.
  • The position research, interprets, and applies occupational health and safety regulations, codes and rules, federal and state laws, and District policies to ensure compliance of the safety program. Develops, conducts, and/or coordinates with vendors to provide all safety training including but not limited to first aid/CPR, confined space entry, GHS hazard communication, lifting, forklift operation, trenching and shoring, operating power equipment and other relevant topics. Maintains all safety records required by law, including Safety Data Sheets (SDS), training, and health testing.
  • Develops, and organizes relevant records for the District’s occupational health and safety program, including developing all necessary forms and related documents, maintaining a filing and archive system compliant with state records retention laws, and ensuring confidentiality of employee records.
  • Maintains up-to date knowledge of safety rules and procedures for a variety of settings, including water and wastewater utilities, wastewater treatment facilities, construction job sites, administration facilities, and other environments. Conducts safety inspections and accident investigations; compiles and analyzes data to prepare reports containing findings and recommendations for mitigating hazards; identifies trends in evaluating the effectiveness of existing programs and activities to develop and recommend new and revised programs and procedures; coordinates with the supervisor and Human Resources on investigations as necessary.
  • Serves as Return-to-Work coordinator for Labor & Industries and on the job injuries, and routinely partners with human resources and third-party coordinators for workers compensation claims, OSHA regulatory annual reporting, and light duty assignments.
  • Develops and coordinates the DOT Commercial Driver’s License drug and alcohol testing program as well as DOT and District reasonable suspicion testing programs, including coordinating with vendors and supervisors to administer monthly random drug and alcohol tests.

The Safety Coordinator must be committed to improving the workplace and providing strong interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and writing skills and functional knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products including Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and PowerPoint. This individual should feel comfortable with computers systems or online modules, and be able to successfully navigate and learn various software applications.

The pay range for this position is $73,392 - $98,352 annually, with a starting pay range of $73,392 - $84,960 dependent upon experience and qualifications.
