JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leader I provides direct leadership for program participants and serves as the on-site staff person for assigned programs. Oversee the proper execution of the program and use of the facility/field and equipment. The incumbent will be required to work outside of normal workday hours including evenings, holidays and weekends.

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
Duties include but are not limited to:
1. Inspect activity areas and related equipment, make written reports of damage and recommend maintenance and repair as needed.
2. Enforce safety rules and regulations of the program and the park.
3. Provide minor first aid to recreation program participants as appropriate.
4. Build and maintain positive working relationships with other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service.
5. Ensure recreation program(s) operate in accordance with general department philosophy, objectives, and guidelines.
6. Keep records and makes periodic reports.
7. Update Recreation Coordinator on status of program, participant concerns and equipment.
8. Set up and take down game field and supervise league play and provide support for coaches and participants.
9. Ensure that facilities/fields are properly used and left in good condition.
10. Assist with other programs or special events as assigned.
11. Effectively communicate with parents and participants.
12. Monitor participants’ behavior to assure a positive and safe program environment.
13. Perform custodial and/or light maintenance duties.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Education, Training, and Experience Guidelines:
High School Diploma or GED and two (2) years’ experience working with a parks and recreation department or related work experience.
• Must have a driving history acceptable to the City and must be able to maintain an insurable driving record.
• Bilingual is preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
• Operational characteristics of recreational sports programs (i.e. soccer, baseball) and facility/field use.
• Principles and practices of standard safety precautions.
• Respectful communication skills.

Skills in:
• Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
• Consistently provide high quality customer service.
• Exercising courtesy and tact in dealing with participants and spectators.
• Problem solve conflicts and disputes as applicable.
• Explain and enforce rules, regulations, procedures, and program objectives.

Ability to:
• Positively influence, engage, and motivate participants, coaches, and spectators.
• React quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
• Work independently with little direction but remains a member of the team.
• Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with others.
• Interact with other using tact, patience and courtesy.
• Maintain composure when interacting with angry or upset individuals.

License and Certification Requirements
• A valid Washington State Driver's License is required.
• A valid CPR/First Aid and AED certification or the ability to acquire after hire.
