Description

The Building Inspector reviews various building and construction plans and applications for both residential and commercial developments and assures compliance with applicable regulations, codes, and processes. In addition, the Building Inspector conducts construction related and code enforcement related field inspections to assure compliance with applicable plans, codes, and regulations; assists the public with permit and code enforcement related questions; works cooperatively with all City employees to improve and refine City processes; and attends to other assigned duties. This is a full-time non-exempt position within the Department of Community Development that reports to the Building Official.

• Perform inspections of residential and commercial buildings in the process of construction, alteration or repair for compliance with applicable code requirements, application of safe construction practices, and other regulations or ordinances relating to safety, health and welfare of the public
• Review building plans for code compliance under the direction of the Building Official and as workload dictates
• Inspect, approve, disapprove and write correction notices, issue stop work orders, and perform other functions to ensure that each aspect of building construction, alteration or repair complies with applicable codes, regulations and approved building plans. Provide structural, building, mechanical, and plumbing code information
• Examine and check buildings and building plans to determine compliance with the structural and non-structural provisions of the building, mechanical and plumbing codes, development regulations and other related regulations per the IBC and IRC
• Conduct land use and building code enforcement activities under the lead direction of the Community Development Manager
• Provide information and assistance regarding applicable building codes and ordinances to the public

Education, Skills & Experience Requirements:
• The successful candidate must possess two years’ experience as a Building Inspector; and a combination equivalent to graduation from High School. Additional education may be substituted for experience.
• Must possess current ICC certification as a Building Inspector
• Must possess or be able to attain within 12 months of employment current mechanical and plumbing certifications (Possession of these certifications upon hire is preferred)
• Have knowledge of International Building Code, International Residential Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fuel Gas Code, Uniform Plumbing Code, WSEC Energy Codes, and other applicable codes
• Must understand Field inspection techniques and procedures, including investigating citizen complaints regarding health, safety or nuisance issues

This position is FLSA non-exempt and is eligible for overtime compensation and benefits. Additional compensation: In addition to annual salary increases with a satisfactory review, employees reaching the maximum salary range and that demonstrate a consistent satisfactory job performance may be eligible for an annual lump sum compensation of 4 percent of their salary.
