Basic Function


A position in this classification will be represented by Teamsters Local 763.

Under the general direction of the Community Center Manager and/or the Facility Operator, the Custodian performs a variety of custodial work to clean and maintain the general appearance of the Federal Way Community Center and grounds. The Custodian must work successfully in a team-oriented atmosphere and demonstrate excellent customer service and human relations skills.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain the floors; including sweeping, mopping, scrubbing cleaning, shampooing and vacuuming.

Clean locker rooms, cabanas, restrooms, kitchens, break rooms, administrative areas, café, lobby, fitness floors, track, and gymnasiums.

Dust, clean up biohazards, move furniture, empty garbage and trash containers on a regular and as-needed basis.

Clean windows and mirrors.

Dust, patch, and paint walls as needed.

Clean the steam room, sauna and spa.

Check parking lot areas and grounds for trash and general safety.

Perform cursory maintenance; replace light bulbs, ceiling tiles, shower heads, plunge toilets and urinals, paint and repair minor building damage and equipment, perform other preventative maintenance and small repairs.

Post appropriate warning/signs when persons should be notified of wet floors, wet paint, off-limits, etc.; utilize a variety of tools and equipment in the performance of the job.

Replenish/restock supplies and/or materials daily; provide input on products to order.

Provide direction to temporary part-time building attendants.

Assist other staff with duties and tasks when needed.

Maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance.

Education and Experience
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to high school graduation and minimum of two (2) years custodial related experience required.

Licenses and other Requirements: Successful completion of employment reference and background check.  Valid Washington State driver's license.


Knowledge of:

  • Safe and effective means to perform routine duties to maintain the cleanliness and safety of public buildings and grounds.
  • Policies and procedures and activities of the Parks Department as they pertain to the performance of the duties of the Custodian.
  • Microsoft Outlook and the ability to track supply usage and re-order, re-stock as needed.
  • Customer service and human relations skills.
  • Safe and effective use of cleaning chemicals and equipment such as floor scrubber, floor buffer, and power tools.

Ability to:

  • Provide excellent customer service while working throughout areas of the facility.
  • Perform light plumbing, carpentry, patch, and paint walls.
  • Have attention to detail and strong work ethic to get the job completed on time and have the facility cleaned to established standards.
  • Maintain an organized and clean work and storage area in order to promote safe and efficient operations.
  • Follow verbal and written instruction.
  • Effectively communicate with co-workers and patrons as needed.
  • Get up and down off the floor several times, climb a ladder and to work on your feet for 8 hours per day.
  • Work in a fast-paced environment; respond calmly and professionally to stressful or emergency situations.
  • Learn and uphold policies and procedures.
  • Conduct several tasks at once with frequent interruptions.
  • To drive city vehicles.
  • Be able to work unsupervised.

Environmental Conditions/Physical Effort :

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposure to heat, cold, dry, wet, odors, smoke, noise, vibrations, dust, mold and mildew, electrical currents, bodily fluids, or intense light. Must be physically able to perform frequent building walk-troughs, including climbing stairs. May also occasionally be required to climb ladder for event building decoration. Perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes in using various types of equipment. Requires the ability to handle a variety of items, equipment, control knobs, switches, etc. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand coordination. Must be adaptable to performing under high stress when confronted with an emergency. May be required to work long hours (12 -14 hours) periodically on days of special events.
