JOB TITLE:             Full Time Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
DEPARTMENT:      Public Works, Wastewater Division
UNION:                   Teamsters Local No 231
SALARY RANGE:  Operator in Training $4854
                                Operator $5083 - $6431 – Non-exempt

JOB SUMMARY:
This position participates in all phases of operation of the Wastewater Utility including the wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, and CSO interceptor. Operators are responsible for routine operation, maintenance and repair of tanks, structures, pumps, valves, piping systems, and process systems. The Operator is responsible for plant operations when assigned weekend, holiday, and after hour work duty. This position is supervised by the Wastewater Utility Manager and typically reports to the Wastewater Utility Assistant Supervisor and Process Analyst.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Operates and performs maintenance and repairs of the Wastewater Treatment Plan (WWTP), pump stations, and CSO interceptor in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  2. Performs and evaluates laboratory tests in accordance with standard methods, and established procedures.
  3. Applies safety techniques and equipment operation in accordance with Labor and Industries, as adopted by the Wastewater Division.
  4. Recognizes and evaluates operational, mechanical, instrumentation abnormalities.
  5. Performs general mechanical and electrical maintenance.
  6. Maintains operational and maintenance records.
  7. Other duties as assigned by the Wastewater Division Manager, Assistant Supervisor, or Process Analyst.
  8. Participate in Special Projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. High school diploma or GED
  2. Must have a driving history acceptable to the City and must maintain an insurable driving record.
  3. Must complete training to work in confined spaces as soon as scheduled by the City.
  4. Must be willing to maintain job proficiency through schools, seminars, correspondence courses, and in house training as directed by the Wastewater Utility Manager.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (Be specific in describing your experience in your resume / cover letter. Ensure the information provided illustrates your competencies, specifically addressing the preferred qualifications listed below):

  1. Experience in collecting and recording data.
  2. Experience operating industrial equipment such as pumps, motors, solids dewatering equipment, compressors, and ultraviolet disinfection.
  3. Experience in mechanical troubleshooting such as pumps including rebuilding and mechanical seal replacement.
  4. Experience in electrical troubleshooting including the ability to read 1 line drawings and identifying components in control panels.
  5. Basic computer skills and the ability to follow both written and oral instructions.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  1. Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
  2. Skilled in oral and verbal communication.
  3. Microsoft Office
  4. Mechanical skills
  5. Reading charts, meters, and drawings accurately.
  6. Excellent customer service

Ability to:

  1. Work with minimum supervision.
  2. Develop an effective working relationship with staff and the public, must have excellent customer service skills.
  3. Learn other job-related software programs
  4. Organize and compile reports.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Must possess and maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
  2. Operator in Training must acquire a Washington State Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification within one year of hire and a Group III upon eligibility usually after three to five years of experience in the position.
  3. Must acquire a “Wastewater Collection Specialist - Group II” upon eligibility
  4. Possession of a Class B - Commercial Driver’s License preferred.
  5. Must possess a WISHA approved First Aid and CPR certification or acquire within 6 months of hire.
  6. Upon employment, the candidate will be required to participate in in-house respiratory training and fit test.

TESTING REQUIREMENTS
Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be required to pass a written test in order to qualify for an interview.

The successful candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment physical and a background check. In addition, the candidate will be required to submit a driver’s abstract with driving history acceptable to the City.
