Description

Public Works, Water Resources is looking for a highly qualified and motivated professional to coordinate the implementation of the City of Olympia’s Habitat and Stewardship program and support integrated stormwater and habitat planning efforts in a team focused environment. This position will be a full-time benefitted position (40 hours per week) funded by the Storm and Surface Water Utility.

This position will coordinate programs that are designed to address aquatic habitat enhancement and stewardship. Major drivers of this program include the 2018 Storm and Surface Water Management Plan, the Habitat and Stewardship Strategy, as well as the City’s Comprehensive Plan. The position will work with the Environmental Services Program Supervisor in setting strategic direction for the City’s Habitat and Stewardship program. The position will also coordinate closely with the Public Works vegetation management program, park stewardship and stormwater staff on habitat and aquatic enhancement projects.

The successful candidate will be expected to have an in depth understanding of urban landscape ecology, habitat enhancement planning and prioritization, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Experience in writing habitat or environmental planning documents, and with writing and administering grants is highly desirable. Collaboration across departments and with community groups is a key aspect of success in this role. This requires respect, open communication, a team approach, and solution-focused approach to problem solving. The ability to foster relationships within the organization and community will be necessary for success.

Experience/Education

  • Four-year degree in Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, Urban Planning or closely related field and three years related experience required.
  • Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Additional related experience may be substituted for the degree on a year for year basis.
  • Additional education and/or experience in Habitat restoration and/or Landscape Ecology is desired.
