Director of Public Defender's Office job in Friday Harbor

San Juan County is establishing an internal Office of Public Defense and is searching for the right candidate to develop and lead this function and act as assigned counsel for indigent clients. Are you that candidate?

In this role, you will direct all legal and administrative functions of the Public Defender’s Office while professionally serving and advising indigent clients. You’ll employ your organizational and planning skills for the efficient and effective performance of the department, along with coordinating and evaluating the efforts of contracted staff. You will develop and implement systems and policies to ensure compliance with federal/state/county policies and procedures and legal requirements. You will develop departmental budgets and oversee the management of expenditures. You will also perform or effectively recommend hiring, training, evaluating performance, and termination of staff.

This position requires graduation from an accredited school of law AND six years progressively responsible experience as a practicing criminal defense trial attorney on felony cases, INCLUDING three years management /supervisory experience. You must be a current member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association, OR must be a current member in good standing of another State Bar Association AND must become a member of the Washington State Bar Association by passing Washington State Bar requirements.
