Description

The Fleet Technician performs full journey level activities in troubleshooting, altering, maintaining, and repairing City equipment. Class-A Commercial Driver License required at time of hire. This position is represented by the Teamsters Local Union #763

Currently the Fleet Technicians work a 9/80 schedule. The flex day would be Mondays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Performs maintenance and repairs on vehicles, equipment, and heavy equipment; replaces air, hydraulic and anti-lock brakes; repairs transmissions; works on electrical systems; repairs heating and cooling systems; and repairs engines.

Selects and purchases various equipment and supplies as needed and maintains inventory.

Diagnoses and troubleshoots vehicle and equipment problems in the shop and in the field.

Designs and fabricates equipment parts not readily available including welding fatigued or failed components, converting equipment to meet seasonal needs, adding modifications to existing equipment, and designing specialized tools and accessories. Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance activities for City vehicles and equipment.

Prepares and maintains various records, documents, and reports.

Provides technical advice to others working in the shop and monitors shop equipment to ensure that the equipment is in safe working order.

Maintains reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during the standard work week.

Prepares vehicles and equipment for replacement, to include removing special equipment and lettering.

Responds to service calls for emergency repair.

Assists departments in writing specifications for new equipment and vehicles; installs equipment; and makes modifications to equipment and vehicles.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
KNOWLEDGE (position requirements at entry):

Maintenance and repair methods and techniques in area of assignment;

Safety precautions applicable to area of assignment;
Tools and equipment used in area of assignment;
Laws and regulations applicable to assigned area;
Troubleshooting and diagnostic procedures related to systems maintained; and
Material management techniques.


SKILLS (position requirements at entry):

  • Performing skilled and journey level maintenance activities related to area of assignment;
  • Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing equipment;
  • Using hand and power tools and diagnostic equipment and instruments;
  • Operating equipment and vehicles maintained;
  • Inventorying and ordering materials and supplies;
  • Applying customer service techniques;
  • Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public; and
  • Communication, both oral and written, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Education Experience and Other Requirements
TRAINING, EXPERIENCE AND LICENSING REQUIREMENTS (Position requirements at entry):

Completion of an approved vocational program and three years of journey level mechanic experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

  • Valid Driver's License with applicable endorsements;
  • Employee must furnish a full set of their own SAE and metric hand tools;
  • Emissions Certificate; and
  • First Aid and CPR certification.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Working Conditions:
Hazardous physical conditions (mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.)
Atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dusts, gases)
Hazardous materials (chemicals)
Intense noise
