The Fleet Technician performs full journey level activities in troubleshooting, altering, maintaining, and repairing City equipment. Class-A Commercial Driver License required at time of hire. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Selects and purchases various equipment and supplies as needed and maintains inventory. Diagnoses and troubleshoots vehicle and equipment problems in the shop and in the field. Designs and fabricates equipment parts not readily available including welding fatigued or failed components, converting equipment to meet seasonal needs, adding modifications to existing equipment, and designing specialized tools and accessories. Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance activities for City vehicles and equipment. Prepares and maintains various records, documents, and reports. Provides technical advice to others working in the shop and monitors shop equipment to ensure that the equipment is in safe working order. Maintains reasonable, predictable, and regular attendance during the standard work week. Prepares vehicles and equipment for replacement, to include removing special equipment and lettering. Responds to service calls for emergency repair. Assists departments in writing specifications for new equipment and vehicles; installs equipment; and makes modifications to equipment and vehicles. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Maintenance and repair methods and techniques in area of assignment; Safety precautions applicable to area of assignment;
Education Experience and Other Requirements Completion of an approved vocational program and three years of journey level mechanic experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY/REQUIREMENTS: Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
