Description

JOB TITLE:             Recreation Positions – Aid, Lead I and Lead II

DEPARTMENT:       Parks and Enrichment Services

CLASSIFICATION:  Seasonal – Varied days and hours

UNION:                  Non Union

SALARY RANGE:    Rec Aid - $13.50 to $15.20 per hour

                              Rec Lead I – $13.92 to 15.68 per hour

                              Rec Lead II – $15.61 to $17.57 per hour

JOB SUMMARY:

Lead II – will perform the duties of planning, leading and supervising recreation programs, and Recreation Aides.  This position is supervised by the Recreation Supervisor.  This position will also need to make sound decisions based on independent judgements verified with the recreation supervisors.  Recreation Lead II may be assigned to assist with other recreation programs through the year based on departmental needs.

Lead I – will perform the duties of planning, leading and supervising youth activities, programs and Recreation aides.  This person will also need to make sound decisions based on independent judgements verified with the recreation supervisors.  Recreation Lead I may be assigned to assist with other recreation programs through the year based on departmental needs.

Aids – will assist in providing recreational activities under the direction of Recreation Leads or supervisors.  Recreation Aides also perform other duties to support department recreation programs, leagues and events.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Aide

  • Assists the Recreation Leader in leading preparing and planning activities such as organized games, arts and crafts, and other activities as requested by the Recreation Leader for recreation program, league or camp programs.
  • Assist with site planning and preparation.
  • Actively leads and monitors program participants. 
  • Helps with the preparation of daily snacks and activities.
  • Assists with daily clean up duties in facilities and fields.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Lead I

  • Must keep accurate daily and session records [i.e. attendance sheets & participant forms].
  • Meets weekly and bi-weekly paperwork due dates [i.e. timesheets, shopping lists, etc.].
  • Updates recreation supervisors on status of supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Supervises participants during programs, trips, special events, leagues and organized activities.
  • Supervises Recreation Aides, including adherence to policies.
  • Ensures proper child/staff ratio’s at all times.
  • Facilitates strong relationships with parents and community partners.
  • Ensures that facilities are properly cared for and left in good condition on a daily basis.
  • Assists with other programs or special events as assigned.
  • Must be able to react quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.

Lead II

  • Plans and implements recreation activities, programs, leagues and trips.
  • Assist with preparation and implementation of special events.

  • Supervise Recreation Lead I and Aides, including adherence to policies.
  • Ensures proper child/staff ratio’s at all times.
  • Facilitates strong customer services with participants, parents, co-workers, staff and public.
  • Ensures that facilities are properly cared for and left in good condition on a daily basis.
  • Assists with other programs or special events as assigned.
  • Office support as necessary [i.e. answer phones, greet customers]
  • Must be able to react quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Monitors safe implementation of programs, events, and facility use.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

All positions:

  • Must be punctual, reliable and able to maintain a professional appearance.
  • Must be able to complete tasks assigned.
  • The ability to communicate well with children and parents verbally.
  • Must exhibit patience and be a good role model to program participants and the public.

Lead positions:

  • Work well with children in leadership situations
  • Must have ability to be flexible in situations that arise
  • Must have ability to direct and motivate participants and staff.
  • Must be an active, enthusiastic and positive role model for both program participants and program aides being supervised.
  • Ability to drive City approved vehicles.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate with parents and participants.
  • Must be able to react quickly and make sound decisions in emergency situations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Aid:

  • Must be at least 16 years of age and enrolled in High School or have H.S. diploma equivalent.
  • Previous experience work with youth.
  • Current First Aid / CPR certification required within the first month of employment.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) Encouraged.

Lead I

  • Must be enrolled in High School or have H.S. diploma equivalent.
  • Must have at least two (2) years’ experience working with children ages 5 to 12 years old.
  • Must have (or be able to obtain when hired) current First Aid / CPR certification.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) preferred.

Lead II:

  • Must be at least 21 years of age with acceptable driving abstract and eligible to transport youth.
  • Must have high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Candidates with, or in process of education in child or recreational related fields preferred.
  • Must have at least 3 years’ experience work with school aged children in a leadership role.
  • Must be able to engage in active play with program participants.
  • Must have (or be able to obtain when hired) current First Aid / CPR certification.
  • Bilingual (English / Spanish) desired.
  • Must be able to pass multi state Background Check and complete I-9.

JOB LOCATION AND EQUIPMENT:

Aid

Recreation Aides must have knowledge in the use of sports equipment such as:  soccer balls, volleyballs, playground balls, baseball equipment, tennis rackets, basketball, etc.

Lead I

Basic knowledge and experience must have knowledge in the use of sports equipment such as:  soccer balls, volleyballs, playground balls, baseball equipment, tennis rackets, basketball, etc.

Lead II

Knowledge and experience in using kitchen equipment for the preparation of snacks, sports equipment and office equipment.

DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

While performing the essential functions of these jobs, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, bend, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talk and hear.  The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb or crawl.  The employee must be able to lift up to 25 pounds on a frequent basis and lift/ move up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis with assistance.  This position works both indoors and outdoors and may be subject to inclement weather.
