Firefighters provide emergency assistance and protective services; they protect life and property threatened by fire, explosion, hazardous materials, medical emergencies, accidents and other hazards that may arise. Activities include emergency response, training and drill activities, pre-fire planning, and maintenance of apparatus, facilities and equipment. Firefighters are assigned to a 24-hour rotating shift and may be exposed to hazardous conditions and risk of personal injury.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS • High School Diploma, or GED • Knowledge of: o Working knowledge of driver safety practices. o Modern fire suppression and prevention and emergency medical service principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment. o First aid and resuscitation techniques and their application as demonstrated through State Emergency Medical Technician Certification. o Applicable laws, ordinances, departmental standard operating procedures and regulations. o Working knowledge of Whatcom County EMS protocols. • Skills & Ability to: o Support and promote and model the City’s mission, vision, and core values in all aspects of job performance. o Work non-standard workweek. o Learn to apply standard firefighting, emergency aid, hazardous materials, and fire prevention techniques. o Perform strenuous or peak physical effort during emergency, training or station maintenance activities for prolonged periods of time under conditions of extreme heights, intense heat, cold or smoke. o Act effectively in emergency and stressful situations. o Follow verbal and written instructions. o Communicate effectively orally and in writing. o Establish effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the general public. o Must be of good moral character and of temperate and industrious habits. o Model and initiate a quality customer service attitude throughout the department. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS • Must be U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent resident of the United States who can read and write the English language. • Must be a minimum of twenty-one (21) years of age. • Must be current on these certifications: o WA State or Nationally Registered EMT o IFSAC Firefighter I, or equivalent o IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations, or equivalent o CPAT certification o EVIP or VFIS driver training certificate • Must have a valid Washington State driver’s license and appropriate insurance at the time of hire (or within 30 days of start date) for work-related travel. • Must have ability to provide 36-month motor vehicle record. • Must pass appropriate background checks, including appropriate work-related physical examination. • Must pass a pre-employment drug test.
