Description

The City of Renton is seeking candidates interested in working with a team of network professionals to administer and support the City's private and public cloud and metropolitan area fiber networks, including data, SAN, voice, video, Wi-Fi and SCADA networks; security systems, servers and backup systems and related hardware, management software.

The work requires knowledge of network systems implementation and on-going maintenance and support practices. Daily activities include supporting the City's networks to assure operation and security. Monitor and maintain enterprise backup, systems evaluation, testing and installation, and customer support. Contact is primarily with other Information Technology team members, the system's customers, departmental staff and vendors.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential Functions:

  • Analyze needs of clients, formulate solutions and design systems and procedures for implementation; make recommendations for cost effective, long-term solutions.
  • Ensure daily error free operation of the City's local/wide area network, Enterprise backup system (network based) including periodic testing; monitoring of the City's network system with tools provided for purpose of providing pro-active problem resolution, maintenance of the City's micro-computer inventory and virus protection software.
  • Seek opportunities to improve work flow/productivity of customers with enabling technologies.
  • Keep current on a diversity of hardware and software for workstations, printers, scanners, laptops, and emerging computing technology.
  • This position will also be responsible for transferring information on new technologies to the other department team members.
  • May be required to carry on-call pager up to 12 weeks per year and be responsible for first response support 24 x 7 while on standby.
  • Manage and maintain the City's phone/voice systems using tools provided by vendors and/or acquired by the City and make recommendations to the manager regarding implementation of new technologies.
  • Communicate with vendors throughout a contract, including training, implementation and support phases of software projects; provide vendor with design specifications as needed to meet customer requirements and/or changes to existing systems.
  • Operate, adjust, modify and install a wide variety of computers, peripherals, software and communications equipment to facilitate repair, upgrade and installation of same

Standard Functions:

  • Evaluate new hardware and software; advise customers and City departmental management on hardware and software alternatives; set standards for selection of software/hardware and assist departments, in conjunction with the Network Systems Manager, with appropriate recommendations and budget considerations.
  • Work with departments to support the implementation of systems and installation of technology which enhances the department's ability to execute its service goals and objectives.
  • Respond to client request for service on problematic systems and/or equipment; troubleshoot problems in conjunction with the IT Service Desk staff to develop solutions; make minor repairs to equipment and arrange for other servicing needs.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination equivalent to: Associate of Arts degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or related field and two years of experience in network systems software, analysis, design, network implementation and system management.
Successful passing of a required background check and national fingerprint-based records check.
