This position is responsible for assistance with, and coordination, of various Emergency Management activities. Serves as staff liaison to various related councils, meetings, and volunteer groups. Works directly with other team members to develop a uniquely prepared community and achieve an effective Emergency Management response to a disaster or other emergency.

JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: 
Essential Functions:
  • Coordinate activities of selected Emergency Management programs as assigned.
  • Assist in conducting exercises to determine the preparedness, response and recovery of all City resources in a coordinated emergency response. 
  • Participate in debrief meetings to evaluate the readiness of staff and efficacy of emergency plans.
  • Assist with the development of budget for Emergency Management programs.
  • Seek program funding through grant and other opportunities, and maintain documentation related to those funding streams.
  • Identify, recruit, select, coordinate and maintain a cadre of instructors/ recruiters/ presenters/ volunteers and resource staff to support various programs.
  • Market Emergency Management programs to city, businesses, media, service organizations, etc. 
  • Participate in campaigns for community events to increase awareness of emergency preparedness and the role of emergency management.
  • Assist in developing, designing and writing articles, new releases, flyers, and newsletter and other materials promoting Emergency Management. 
  • Assist in maintaining and updating communications including, e-mail lists, social media, newsletters, web site, and other external communications.
  • Maintain documentation of Emergency Management program activities and personnel.
  • Assist with and participate in volunteer recognition programs.
  • Staff liaison to volunteer Emergency Management groups as assigned.
  • Delegate/assign, prioritize, review, and ensure timely completion of duties of volunteers and interns.
  • Attend a variety of meetings, community events, training classes and assist in special assignments.  May chair such meetings as assigned.
  • Assist in the development and design of training programs, teach and provide training in all aspects and phases of emergency management to the public, business, community agencies, schools and City staff as assigned.
  • Develop and write emergency plans that are locally relevant, compliant with state and federal guidance, and that solicit and incorporate stakeholder contributions.
  • Assist in developing, maintaining and updating program reports as required.
  • Serve as an on-call duty officer in a rotating assignment, which includes 24/7 during the rotation.
  • Carry assigned communication device and be available to respond to the EOC during emergencies and disasters.
  • Serve in the City of Renton's Emergency Operations Center or other locations as assigned during a disaster or other emergency.
  • Remain current with relevant technological advancements as it relates to field.
  • Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance, work evening and/or weekend hours as assigned, and travel as required.
 
Standard Functions:
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Emergency Management, Public Administration, Social Sciences, or related field.
  • Completion of IS- 100, 200, 700.
  • Demonstrated and verifiable working experience in Emergency Management, Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security, or in a related field required.
  • Certification in related areas of training or programs is highly desirable.
  • Certified Emergency Manager® credential preferred.
  • Valid Washington State driver's license or the ability to secure within one month.
  • Successful passing of a required background check and driving record review.
