The City of Vancouver, WA (approximate population 185,000) is seeking an experienced law enforcement professional with demonstrated leadership capabilities to serve as its new Assistant Chief of Police. The City of Vancouver is one of the nation’s most livable cities, with a growing economy, an exemplary education system, and access to high quality health care, housing, transportation, parks, and many other amenities. Under general direction from and reporting directly to the Chief of Police, the Assistant Chief of Police provides administrative direction and leadership of the Administrative Services or Field Operations Bureaus of the Vancouver Police Department. The ideal candidate will foster diversity of though, equity, and inclusion. Candidates must possess the equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in police science, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field; a Master’s degree is preferred. A minimum of ten (10) years of increasingly responsible and varied police management experience is required. A certificate of completion from the FBI National Academy or the Police Executive Research Forum Senior Management Institute for Police (SMIP) course is highly desirable. The management or executive management certificate of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission or equivalent certificate is also highly desirable. The selected candidate will be required, by state law, to undergo a polygraph examination as part of the hiring process. The annual salary range for the Assistant Chief of Police is $117,612-$152,916 (City is currently conducting a market study for 2019 salary structure); placement within this range is dependent upon experience and qualifications of the selected individual.
